This is a fast visit. The crater has a great set of metal stairs that circle the wall making the climb pretty easy. There are many stairs and they look imposing but they are short easy steps to navigate up or down. They are also slip resistant so should be fine when they are wet as well. Snow or ice would be trickier. There is a bench halfway up to rest and regroup. Views from the top are amazing. The crater does not have a lake like the Kerid Crater but its interesting to climb none the less. Free parking, no WC at this location. Plan 10 minutes to climb...probably 30 min total. Wind does make the climb harder so use caution when its very windy.

Saxhóll Crater is a fantastic, accessible stop! The well-built stairs make for an incredibly easy climb to the top of this striking volcanic crater. Once there, you're rewarded with truly excellent panoramic views – a vast plain stretching out on one side and majestic mountains on the other. It's a quick, worthwhile tour on the main road that won't take more than 25-30 minutes of your time, offering a memorable glimpse of Iceland's unique landscape. Highly recommend for a stunning photo opportunity and a breath of fresh air!

A quick visit with a short hike to the top of the crater. It was great to reach the summit so quickly and see the crater’s interior up close. The surrounding views are also lovely. Definitely recommend a brief stop if you’re passing by this route.

Visited May 16, mid afternoon - busy spot, with paid parking.

I found the stairs to be the most interesting thing here…it’s an alright spot, but we visited better craters throughout Iceland I found.

You can explore a bit more at the top, but be careful of the rock, I saw an elderly couple fall pretty hard after tripping on lava rock at the top.
