Glorious walk, did this with 2 children aged 12 and 8 who managed fine, took just over an hour to get the swimming area. If you swim as upstream as you can go the water is lovely and hot - slightly hotter than a hot tub. Lower down more like a warm bath. Some changing screens you can use. Lovely hot springs on the way and an incredible waterfall too.

This was my 21 y.o. daughter's favorite part of our 5 day vacation. The rest of us loved it as well. There is a somewhat difficult hike, with a few beautiful overlooks and vistas. The thermal stream at the top is an amazing experience. The water is shallow with a few pools to sit in. There is a boardwalk next to the pools and a few dividers for changing. No place for being bashful.

Tiring but doable and worth it! It's nice to get the hard part over with first. There was a windstorm although not too cold, I wish I had gloves and a winter hat as my 10 year old did.

We made it up in about an hour, down much faster with the wind literally pushing us.

Although the pools were a little full around 5pm, there was plenty of room. As people said, changing isn't ideal but do it fast, behind a partial screen or wrapped in a towel and you're fine. We thought about turning around a couple times because the wind was a huge pain, but glad we didn't. When you're in the water relaxing, it's totally worth it.

WHAT A WILD RIDE.

Left at 130pm and made it in 1.5hours with dawdling and taking photos here and there, in the midst of moderate winds in peak of winter (around -5°C). It was not an easy hike but oh so worth it to get to the hot springs! Absolutely stunning views with a clear day and sun.

We got in and were able to just submerge ourselves to stay warm, felt like 40°C! Fortunately for us everyone was leaving (about 8 people, 2 groups) - sane folk who wanted to get back before the light ran out - so we got it mostly to ourselves! It was absolutely gorgeous and I felt blessed to be in the middle of divine nature as the sun slowly began to set.

The hard bit was getting out and getting changed - I don't think I've experienced cold like that (note, I'm an Aussie so makes sense). Note solely wooden screens for changing. Was silly to put my hair under because I had frozen icicle hair! Pro tip - keep your beanie on/keep hair tied up while in the water to prevent getting icicles from your head being out. In hindsight would have been worth it to wear a swimming cap/beanie with all hair covered, as the steam from the hot water creates droplets in your hair which then freeze and give you an ice helmet!

Wind was more intense to get back, left around 4pm made it back around 515/520pm with a faster pace, with almost no light upon our return to the carpark. My fingers remained frozen and my fiancée who has poor circulation in her extremities didn't get feeling back until she had a hot shower, mamma mia! But we both agreed it was totally worth it.

DO NOT MISS THIS EXPERIENCE

Great experience - moderately challenging hike (5.6 miles total, 1200 ft elev gain) but worth it for a chance to soak in the thermal pools. There are some changing screens, but be prepared to change in public. There were also lots of bugs, recommend bringing a screen/netting for your face.

I wish I read more comments warning how long the walk is to the thermal river from the car park. Or more like, I wish I did took them more seriously. It was 4 km, about an hour walk mostly uphill (steep at the beginning but more up and down later). We arrived at the car park at 3 pm, which is late for December sunsets (sunset was at 3:30 pm, but civil twilight until around 4:45 pm), and we got back to the car park at 6 pm, walked back in the dark.

It was around -7⁰C, lots of snow, so the path was quite slippery, we managed in hiking boots, without crampons but had to be careful. The water at the highest part of the river was really nice and hot, still okay to go in despite the cold. Getting changed was not easy, it's a good idea to have swimwear on already. After walking for an hour though, not going in for a dip was not an option 😂
One group was just leaving when we arrived, so we had one of the pools for ourselves for a while, but then another group arrived for an evening dip. Do I guess going later is a good way to avoid crowds, but it's still not empty, when it's already getting dark.

Amazing views and I never thought I would have the chance to hang out in a thermal river. The higher up you go, the hotter it is and we couldn’t handle the heat at some points. It was 3.5 km or about 50-60 min up and then you have to get back down. Make sure your children can handle it.
